Russian envoy summoned to Moldova’s Foreign Ministry over referendums

It was added that Moldova will not recognize the results of the plebiscite and "resolutely condemns" the annexation of new regions to Russia

CHISINAU, October 6. /TASS/. Russian Ambassador to Chisinau Oleg Vasnetsov has been summoned to the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration over the recent referendums in the Donetsk and the Lugansk People’s Republics as well as the Zaporozhye and the Kherson Regions.

Moldovan "Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu has issued an order to summon Russian Ambassador to Chisinau Oleg Vasnetsov and express this country’s position concerning the attempt at illegitimate annexation by Russia of some Ukrainian territories," the Moldovan ministry said in a statement on Thursday. Moldova will not recognize the results of the plebiscite and "resolutely condemns" the annexation of new regions to Russia, it added.

From September 23 to September 27, the two Donbass republics as well as the Kherson Region and the Zaporozhye Region held referendums where the overwhelming majority of voters opted to join Russia. On September 30, Russian President Vladimir Putin and the leaders of the four regions signed treaties on their accession to Russia.

Addressing the Kremlin-hosted ceremony on Friday, Putin said that the choice made by the people at the referendums was their inalienable right as per the UN Charter.
