BUCHAREST, March 28. /TASS/. A naval mine was spotted in the Black Sea on Monday about 70 kilometers away from Romania’s Capu Midia, Constanta, the Romanian Naval Staff has said.
A minesweeper and a group of divers with bomb disposal experience were dispatched to the area. The mine had been spotted from a Romanian fishing boat on Monday morning. The Naval Staff said the mine was disposed of without any problems.
On March 19, Russia’s federal security service FSB said that some of the naval mines Ukraine had laid on routes of approach to its Black Sea ports might be drifting towards Bosporus and the Mediterranean after breaking off from cables. The FSB said the Ukrainian military "once again demonstrated utter defiance of international law and neglect of human lives, including the lives of EU citizens."
Under an international convention, it is prohibited to lay moored contact mines if they do not turn harmless after breaking off cables.
