Ex-German Chancellor weighs in on causes of current Ukraine conflict

Europe will later expand its defense capabilities, Gerhard Schroeder said

BERLIN, March 25. /TASS/. The current situation in Ukraine is the consequence of political errors made after the collapse of the Berlin Wall, ex-Chancellor of Germany Gerhard Schroeder said when speaking in Turkey’s Kartepe city.

"We have not yet created the security architecture that would address the situation changed after the collapse of the Berlin Wall," Schroeder said, cited by Die Welt news outlet. "The war in Ukraine is the consequence of this political failure," he noted.

Europe will later expand its defense capabilities, the ex-chancellor said. "Europe should take more responsibility for its security, either in the EU or in NATO," Schroeder noted. "However, Europe should not at the same time focus on the military sphere exclusively," he added.
