Iran believes it’s possible to achieve security in Gulf area — ambassador to Russia

The establishment of comprehensive security in the Persian Gulf is possible only when the countries of the region have dialogue, engagement and cooperation with each other without foreign interference, Kazem Jalali noted

MOSCOW, March 21. /TASS/. Tehran believes it’s possible to achieve comprehensive security in the Persian Gulf area through dialogue and cooperation of the region’s countries, Kazem Jalali, the Iranian ambassador in Moscow, told TASS.

"Our principled position is the security of the region through the countries of the region," he said in an interview. "We believe that the establishment of comprehensive security in the Persian Gulf is possible only when the countries of the region have dialogue, engagement and cooperation with each other without foreign interference."

According to the ambassador, it’s on this basis that Iran has come forward with an initiative aimed at promoting dialogue and reducing tensions in the region. "In order to maintain stability and security, Iran has already presented such ideas as the formation of a forum for regional dialogue and a non-aggression pact with the countries of the region," Jalali said.

At the start of the year, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Moscow was in favor of holding a conference on security in the Persian Gulf with a wide range of participants.

When asked if Tehran would be interested in taking part in the conference, Jalali recalled that over the past two years, at the initiative of the Russian Federation, two expert meetings were held in Moscow on ensuring collective security in the Persian Gulf region, in which representatives of Iran took part. "Of course, the Islamic Republic of Iran has always emphasized its principled policy of strengthening good neighborliness, trust and dialogue with neighbors," the diplomat said.
