SOCHI, May 1. /TASS/. Russian racer Daniil Kvyat from team Red Bull received a penalty of 10 seconds in the pit lane for causing an emergency situation at the track in Sochi during 2016 F1 Russia Grand Prix on Sunday.
Qualified on Saturday in the 8th position, Kvyat was aggressive during the opening lap on Sunday and hit four-time F1 Champion Sebastian Vettel in the back of his car forcing the German driver out of the race.
After driving a scooter himself with a race marshal sitting behind him to the team box, Vettel told journalists that "I just saw the footage, no way I could have done anything else."
"I feel sorry for Danny, because I hit him too as a consequence," Vettel said adding that "people behind do not break."
Vettel retired from the race in Lap 1 after hitting a rail and damaging his Ferrari, while Russia’s Kvyat continued the race after serving the penalty time.
Germany’s Nico Rosberg from team Mercedes is maintaining the strong lead after the start from the pole position on Sunday. His teammate Lewis Hamilton, the winner of the two previous Sochi GPs, is following in the second place with a more than 12 seconds gap.
