Russian figure skater Yulia Lipnitskaya, whose age is 15 years 8 months 4 days, became the youngest Olympic champion in the past 78 years, winning on Sunday the team ladies short program and team ladies free skating at the Winter Olympics in the southern Russian resort of Sochi.
German figure skater Maxi Herber, who died in 2006, is still the youngest female Winter Olympic champion. She secured gold in pair skating at the 1936 Winter Olympics. Herber was aged 15 years 4 months and 5 days then.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, who attended the Olympic team figure skating tournament at the Iceberg arena in Sochi, stood up to greet Lipnitskaya after her victorious performance.
