Russian customs interdicts one-ton shipment of Nicaraguan cocaine at St. Petersburg port

The controlled substance had been packed in 1,000 parcels that were then concealed in the upper section of a cargo module

ST. PETERSBURG, January 10. /TASS/. Russian customs officers discovered a cache containing over one ton of cocaine in a container shipped from Nicaragua at the Great Port of St. Petersburg.

According to the Federal Customs Service of Russia’s press office, the street value of the seized narcotics shipment is about 11 bln rubles (more than $121.6 mln).

"Over a ton of cocaine was discovered by customs officials in a container that originated in Nicaragua. Narcotics worth 11 billion rubles were confiscated [by customs officers working together] with FSB [Russian Federal Security Service] operatives at St. Petersburg’s Great Port," the press office said.

The controlled substance had been packed in 1,000 parcels that were then concealed in the upper section of a cargo module. Tests confirmed that the compressed white powder is cocaine. Criminal charges have been filed in connection with the drug interdiction case.
