Hainan’s Sanya expanding plantations of new mango-flavored variety of pineapple

Due to its relatively modest scale, this agricultural product is still rarely found on the local market

HAIKOU /China/, August 20. /The city of Sanya on Hainan Island is gradually expanding plantations to grow a new variety of mango-flavored pineapple. This was reported by the Nanguo Metropolis Daily.

"Mango pineapple is a new unusual tropical fruit that has been introduced to Sanya and is being cultivated under local conditions," commented the city's Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

This variety of pineapple is said to be gaining popularity in China due to its special flavor. In mainland China, it is mainly cultivated in Hainan. However, due to its relatively modest scale, this agricultural product is still rarely found in the local market.

"We recently imported 700 seedlings, each 30-50 centimeters tall, with a trunk about 3-4 centimeters in diameter. They are taking root well here," the Sanya Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences reported.

Agronomists and farmers in Hainan started growing mango pineapple several years ago. It has a distinctive flavor, is sweeter and juicier, and has golden tender flesh. This variety was imported to the southernmost province of China from Taiwan.
