Mortality rates in 2022 returned to pre-pandemic levels, says Russian Health Minister

It was also noted that life expectancy in Russia in 2022 rose to 72.6 years, or 2.5 years higher than in 2021

MOSCOW, March 6. /TASS/. The decrease in the number of coronavirus patients in Russia in 2022 was instrumental in bringing mortality rates back down to pre-pandemic levels, Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said on Monday.

"The decline in the number of COVID cases in 2022, seen since May, has already enabled medical institutions to revert virtually back to their regularly planned operational schedules and <...> in terms of mortality rates, to return to the pre-pandemic period, although patients continue to present with COVID-19 symptoms," he said at a State Duma hearing on public health.

The minister also noted that life expectancy in Russia in 2022 rose to 72.6 years, or 2.5 years higher than in 2021, whereas the forecasted figure for 2022 had been 71.1 years.
