Hainan incoming tourism for Golden Week up 18.2% to 6.4 mln

The province offered tourists a comprehensive program, including participation in various entertainment events, experiencing local culture and participating in sports programs

HAIKOU /China/, January 30. /TASS/. Hainan welcomed about 6.4 million tourists on the week-long national holiday on the occasion of the Lunar New Year (it came on January 22). This was reported by the Department of Culture and Tourism of the province.

According to department, the flow of tourists during the Golden Week (January 21-27) increased by 18.2% compared to the same period in 2022. The agency noted that Hainan's income from tourism rose by 23.5% to 9.29 billion yuan ($1.37 billion at the current exchange rate).

The island has become one of the most popular holiday destinations in the PRC during the holiday, the department stated. Tourists arriving in Hainan visited beaches, restaurants, shopping malls and attractions, boosting the local consumer sector.

"Over the holidays, we welcomed more than 15,000 tourists a day," Feng Chao, deputy general manager of the company operating one of China's leading diving bases on the small island of Wuzhizhou, located near the resort town of Sanya, was quoted by the Nanguo Metropolis Daily as saying.

According to Sun Xiangtao, deputy secretary-general of the Tourism Agency Association in Haikou, the province offered tourists a comprehensive program of various entertainment events, introduction into the island's culture and participation in local sports programs during the holidays.

The Lunar New Year is one of the most important holidays in China. It is usually celebrated at home, with relatives and friends, so every year on the eve of and after this date there is always a peak of travel in China, there is a noticeable increase in road, rail and air passenger traffic.
