COVID-19 deaths down 17% worldwide in past week — WHO

GENEVA, October 20. /TASS/. More than 2.9 million people worldwide have been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus infection worldwide between October 10 and 17, with over 8,000 deaths registered in the reported period, the World Health Organization said in its weekly bulletin on Wednesday.

Cases declined by 6%, and fatalities dropped by 17% in the reported period, the global organization said.

According to the organization’s COVID-19 Weekly Epidemiological Update, a total of 2,963,504 COVID-19 cases and 8,294 related deaths were reported to the organization between October 10 and 17.

A serious decline in cases compared to the previous seven-day period of October 3-9 was reported by Eastern Mediterranean (down 17%), Africa (down 15%), America (down 12%) and Europe (down 11%). At the same time, COVID-19 incidence increased in the Western Pacific Region (up 11%).

The number of new weekly deaths decreased in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (down 35%), the Americas (down 20%), Europe (down 18%) and the Western Pacific Region (down 14%). At the same time, the number of deaths spiked in the African Region (up 144%).

The biggest number of new cases registered in the past week was reported by Germany (583 232), followed by France (337,253), China (328,910), Italy (288,452) and the United States (251,280). The United States accounts for the majority of COVID-related deaths registered between October 10 and 1, with 2,274 fatalities. Russia is second with 702 deaths, followed by Italy (478), China (431) and Japan (409).

As of October 16, 2022, a total of 623,000,396 million confirmed cases and over 6,550,033 deaths have been reported globally since the start of the pandemic.
