Hainan seed breeding ‘Silicon Valley' boosting development — official

Local authorities are actively promoting the development of modern laboratories, said Wang Qiyang, secretary of the Sanya Municipal Party Committee

HAIKOU /China/, January 11. /TASS/. The scientific and industrial complex on the southern coast of China's Hainan Island, also known as the ‘Silicon Valley ‘of breeding, is growing at a fast pace, according to Wang Qiyan, Committee and Secretary of the Sanya Municipal Party Committee.

"The breeding ‘Silicon Valley’, which has gained global recognition, has stepped up its growth," China News Service quoted Wang Qiyang as saying at the 4th International Seed Production Conference in Sanya. Local authorities have actively promoted the development of modern seed and agricultural research laboratories, he said.

The Sanya Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City plays a key role in the development of Hainan's advanced tropical agriculture sector, the official noted. More than 3,100 innovative enterprises have been registered on its territory. This advanced development zone is expected to play an increasingly important role as a base for animal and plant germplasm projects in China.

According to Sanya Mayor Chen Xi, in 2025, the city will continue to support seed projects, promote the establishment of major market players and attract leading foreign companies in the field. The local government also plans to introduce advanced technologies and create recognizable brands.

Hainan plays an important role in increasing crop yields and developing new plant varieties. There is a well-established seed breeding cluster in Sanya, which will soon become China's 'Breeding Silicon Valley'. According to the official plan, it should be established by 2030 to ensure effective integration of scientific, production and commercial projects. The provincial authorities are actively promoting international programs in this area, regularly holding exhibitions and conferences with the participation of leading specialists from all over the world, including Russia.
