HAIKOU /China/, February 5. / /TASS/. National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute" (MPEI) will help promote space exploration projects in Hainan. This was announced by Mayor of Wenchang (northeast of the province) and head of the administration of the local aerospace science city Liu Chun said when commenting on the establishment of the Russian university's campus on the island.
"The laying of the foundation stone of National Research University MPEI opens a new page in [strengthening] the openness of Hainan's [education] system <...> and will provide important assistance to the sectoral development of the Wenchang International Aerospace City," he was quoted as saying by China News Service.
According to Liu Chong, the cooperation with MPEI will help attract in-demand specialists to Hainan and facilitate the implementation of scientific and technological developments.
The ceremony of laying the first foundation stone of the National Research University "MPEI" in Hainan took place on January 30. According to the news service, investments in the project are estimated at 2.4 billion yuan ($337 million at current exchange rates). The area of the campus, where up to 10 thousand people will study, will cover 395 thousand square meters.
The Wenchang International Aerospace City was established in October 2019, about three years after the nearby spaceport went into operation. This facility, which covers an area of up to 42 square kilometers, consists of two zones about 15 kilometers apart. One of them is adjacent to the launch sites, while the other is a science town where high-tech companies are forming an advanced scientific-industrial cluster.
