Russia’s NIOH-14 smallpox drug can only be used in hospital settings, instructions say

MOSCOW, October 5. /TASS/. The NIOH-14 smallpox drug, which was earlier registered by the Russian Health Ministry, can only be used in hospital settings, according to the drug’s instructions included in the State Register of Medicines.

"The use of the NIOH-14 drug is only possible as part of hospital treatment," the instructions read, adding that the drug is available by prescription.

The Russian sanitary watchdog explained on its Telegram channel that NIOH-14 would be held in government reserves to be used in case of need.

The drug was developed by the Russian sanitary watchdog’s Vector Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology and the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Vorozhtsov Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry.
