West Siberian research center to train personnel for carbon testing grounds

Tyumen State University has significant experience in the study of global climate change, land use and biodiversity

April 28. /TASS/. West Siberian Interregional Research and Education Center will become a training center for organizations - operators of carbon testing grounds, where an automated assessment of carbon emissions will be carried out, stated by rector of Tyumen State University Ivan Romanchuk at the strategic session of the top-notch research center, the press service of Tyumen State University reported on Wednesday.

"West Siberian Interregional Research and Education Center will become a training center for organizations - operators of carbon testing grounds and a scientific and methodological center for developing optimal ways to reduce the carbon footprint for organizations in the real sector of the economy. Sibur has shown great interest in creating a carbon testing ground at Tyumen State University," Romanchuk was quoted as saying by the press service of the university.

The session discussed the creation of a new carbon testing ground on the basis of Tyumen State University by West Siberian Research and Education Center. It is proposed to join the efforts of researchers within the framework of a unified "umbrella" project, which would cover a wide range of fundamental and applied scientific problems, such as measuring flows of climatic gases, studying the sequestration potential of natural ecosystems in relation to carbon, studying the role of soil biota in the carbon cycle, etc, as well as the development of economic models and regulatory documents for decarbonization.

Tyumen State University has significant experience in the study of global climate change, land use and biodiversity. The university takes part in major international climate monitoring projects such as PEEX, SASCHA, GBIF, Chronicles of Nature and others. International cooperation on climate change has been launched with leading research centers in Germany, Norway, Finland, France, US and many other states.

The participants of the strategic session were very interested in new projects proposed for inclusion in the program of activities of the West Siberian Science and Education Center. Among them are projects aimed at technological control of infrastructure facilities in the Arctic in conditions of melting permafrost, the development of new technologies for the construction of highways in the North, etc. A significant proportion of the projects proposed for inclusion in the top-notch center's program were socio-humanitarian initiatives, projects covering cultural studies, philosophy.

West Siberian Interregional Research and Education Center unites organizations from  Tyumen Region, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District (Yugra) and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District. The session was attended by almost 300 people - representatives of universities, academic and applied scientific organizations, as well as the real sector of the economy.
