WASHINGTON, March 27. /TASS/. Russia and the United States have opened "a window of opportunity" for improving bilateral relations but they need to speed up this work, Moscow’s new Ambassador to the US Alexander Darchiev told reporters upon arrival in Washington.
"It’s encouraging that I arrived in the US as Russia’s ambassador in a situation where a certain window of opportunity has opened for our bilateral relations, which were teetering on the edge of collapse under the previous [US] administration," the diplomat pointed out.
"The presidents of our countries have set the task of restoring intergovernmental ties, which were actually severed by [previous US President] Joe Biden’s team, and normalize the operation of the diplomatic missions of Russia and the US. The relevant work is underway in all areas, and both parties are focused on achieving results, but dealing with the toxic legacy, including heaps of sanctions, requires even more effort," the envoy noted.
"It’s not only about easing visa procedures for the members of our diplomatic missions and ordinary citizens, and easing travel rules for diplomats in the host country who make trips as part of their professional activities, but also about difficult issues such as the return of Russia’s six confiscated properties and the restoration of direct flights, which were suspended by Washington," he stressed.
"These are the issues that I plan to tackle. Practical work has taken off at a good pace, which can and should be sped up based on the principle of strict reciprocity," the Russian ambassador added.
Alexander Darchiev has been involved in the diplomatic service since 1992. Until recently, he headed the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Department of the North Atlantic. He served as Russian Ambassador to Canada in 2014-2021. Darchiev worked at the Russian Embassy in Washington in 1997-2002 and 2005-2010. He is fluent in English and French.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree appointing Darchiev as Moscow’s ambassador to Washington on March 6. Russia’s previous ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, ended his tenure on October 5, 2024.
