Russia wants to break down barriers in UN Human Rights Council — MFA

According to the statement, the HRC session will consider a wide range of issues relating to international human rights

MOSCOW, February 26. /TASS/. Russia plans to push to end the standoff within the UN Human Rights Council when the agency holds its 55th session in Geneva, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

"The Russian Federation, which is participating in the session as an observer, intends, as before, to actively do what it can to break down barriers and promote a unifying agenda, as well as to foster understanding among partners of the importance of establishing a constructive international dialogue to promote and protect human rights, with due respect for the national, cultural and historical distinctions of each country," the ministry said in a statement.

According to the statement, the HRC session will consider a wide range of issues relating to international human rights.

"Among them are protecting the rights of children and the disabled, ensuring freedom of religion, observance of human rights in the fight against terrorism, prevention of torture, protection of cultural and social rights, combating discrimination against minorities, as well as other issues on the subject," the ministry said.

In addition, the session will cover the human rights situation in countries such as Ukraine, Afghanistan, Belarus, Belarus, Venezuela, Iran, Cyprus, the DPRK, Myanmar, Syria, Sudan, and the Central African Republic.

The Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental body within the UN. It was established in 2006, replacing the Commission on Human Rights, which was often criticized for being biased. The 55th session of the HRC is taking place in Geneva from February 26 to April 5.
