No chance for Ukraine to become EU member in foreseeable future — upper house speaker

People have been leaving that country, since they see no prospects for development, Valentina Matviyenko said

MINSK, June 26. /TASS/. Ukraine will not be able to become a European Union member in the foreseeable future, speaker of Russia’s Federation Council, or upper parliament house, Valentina Matviyenko said on Sunday.

"Of course, Ukraine will never be a European Union member in the immediate future. First, there is not a single condition for that as it complies with not a single requirement for joining the European Union. Second, it is the biggest European country with a population of more than 40 million. Regrettably, much less today. People have been leaving that country, since they see no prospects for development. I don’t think the European Union will admit a country with a completely ruined economy," she said in an interview with Belarus’ STV television channel.

"Suppose they are a European Union member, it will be the end of it because it would collapse both economically and politically in no time," Matviyenko noted. "That is why attempts at gaining control of not only countries but also of international institutions are also doomed to failure.".
