Unregulated research for bioagents posing global risks, Russian chief sanitary doctor says

Rospotrebnadzor has been making efforts to enhance control of various pathogens, that could emerge or be imported, and to train health personnel so that they could diagnose normal and abnormal diseases, Anna Popova stressed

MOSCOW, May 20. /TASS/. The unregulated research for biologic agents, for dangerous infections in particular, may create risks globally, Russia’s chief sanitary doctor Anna Popova told TASS.

"The unregulated research for biologic agents, mostly dangerous agents - and we can hear that work is being done on extremely dangerous infections, - may create risks globally," Popova, who heads the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor), said in an interview.

Rospotrebnadzor has been making efforts to enhance control of various pathogens, that could emerge or be imported, and to train health personnel so that they could diagnose normal and abnormal diseases, Popova said.

"There are also a range of measures that we have been taking," Popova said. "We will do our best to protect the people in Russia and our friends abroad from potential biologic threats".
