EU unlikely to seek to mend ties with Russia now, says Russian EU envoy

"We have to state that the situation on the track of European security remains in a deep crisis," Vladimir Chizhov noted

MOSCOW, June 24. /TASS/. The policy of Western countries makes it clear that an improvement in relations between the European Union and Russia is unlikely at the moment, Russia’s EU Ambassador Vladimir Chizhov said in a video address to the 9th Moscow Conference on International Security on Thursday.

"We have to state that the situation on the track of European security remains in a deep crisis. We cannot expect today that our Western partners will take real steps together to remedy it on the basis of equality, mutual respect, principles of indivisibility, security and not strengthening it at the expense of others," Chizhov said.

"This does not mean that work to overcome the current state of things can be stopped or left till better days. Rather the contrary is the case, otherwise these better days may never come," the envoy added.

More than 600 guests are taking part in the 9th Moscow Conference on International Security, held in the Russian capital city on June 23-24 and organized by the Russian Defense Ministry. The forum discusses global regional stability, as well as various aspects of security in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.
