STOCKHOLM, January 14. /TASS/. At least two houses have caught fire as a river of lava from the erupting volcano on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula reached the city of Grindavik, the Icelandic national broadcaster RUV reported, citing the Icelandic Meteorological Office.
The eruption began this morning in the southwest of Iceland. A state of emergency has been declared in the region.
According to the broadcaster, Grindavik residents were evacuated last night.
There are 33 active volcanic systems in Iceland. Since 2021, there have been four eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula: in March 2021, August 2022, July 2023, and December 2023.
