Russia documents record-high number of extremist crimes in five years in 2022

From January to December 2022, 1,566 extremist crimes were registered which is 509 more than in 2021, becoming the highest figure since 2018

MOSCOW, January 29. /TASS/. More than 1,500 crimes of extremist nature were recorded in Russia last year which is almost 50% more than in 2021, according to the statistics of the office of the Prosecutor General analyzed by TASS on Sunday.

In all, from January to December 2022, 1,566 extremist crimes were registered which is 509 more than in 2021, becoming the highest figure since 2018. According to the statistics, 1,265 such crimes were recorded in 2018 and 585 were documented in 2019.

The majority of such crimes are committed on the Internet. Last October, Russian Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov noted that the extremist acts on the Internet more often involved calls for violence becoming more pronounced following the onset of the special military operation.

According to the Russian Criminal Code, extremist crimes include crimes motivated by political, ideological, racial, nationalist or religious hatred or animosity as well as by hatred or animosity with regards to a social group.
