Russia’s energy consumption down 1.4% year-to-date, excluding leap year effect

According to Russian Deputy Minister of Energy Evgeny Grabchak, electricity consumption in the South and the Far East rose by 2.5-3% compared to the same period last year

KAZAN, May 19. /TASS/. Electricity consumption in Russia has decreased by 1.4% since the beginning of the year, excluding the leap year factor. Meanwhile, consumption in the South and the Far East has increased by 2.5-3%, Russian Deputy Minister of Energy Evgeny Grabchak told TASS on the sidelines of the "Russia-Islamic World" forum in Kazan.

"Energy consumption in Russia is highly dependent on weather conditions. We had a relatively warm winter, so current consumption is lower than last year by approximately 1.4%, if we exclude February 29 from the previous year. Under comparable conditions, that’s roughly a 1.4% decline. If we adjust for temperature to normalize the comparison, the nationwide decrease currently stands at around 1%," he said.

According to the Deputy Minister, several regions - including the South and the Far East - are showing significant growth. Electricity consumption there rose by 2.5-3% compared to the same period last year.

In April, System Operator CEO Fyodor Opadchy told TASS that electricity consumption in Russia declined by 1.7% in the Q1 2025 due to unseasonably warm weather at the beginning of the year. However, when adjusted for temperature effects, the indicator showed a 0.1% increase.

Earlier, Opadchy reported that in 2024, electricity consumption in Russia rose by 3.1%, reaching 1.192 trillion kWh. Electricity consumption within the Unified Energy System (UES) of Russia also increased by 3.1%, totaling 1.174 trillion kWh.
