Russia to boost gas export to 438 bcm by 2050

Gas output may reach 853 bcm in 2030, 965 bcm in 2036, and 1.107 trillion cubic meters in 2050

MOSCOW, November 9. /TASS/. Russia’s export of natural gas may rise from 146 bln cubic meters (bcm) in 2023 to 438 bcm in 2050, according to a revised energy strategy through 2050 obtained by TASS, which has been submitted to the Russian government.

According to the targeted scenario, export supplies of gas amounted to 146 bcm in 2023, with pipeline deliveries totaling 101 bcm, while LNG supplies equaling 45 bcm. In 2025, overall volume of gas export may reach 438 bcm, with 197 bcm of pipeline supplies and 241 bcm of LNG.

Russia’s gas production amounted 637 bcm in 2023, according to the strategy. Gas output may reach 853 bcm in 2030, 965 bcm in 2036, and 1.107 trillion cubic meters in 2050. Gas supplies to the domestic market are expected to grow from 496 bcm in 2023 to 669 bcm in 2050.

The development of the gas sector is mainly focused on evening out of negative consequences of EU countries’ refusal to cooperate and economically efficient satisfaction of the mounting gas demand inside the country, the document said. Growth of gas export volumes is projected due to development of pipeline infrastructure and implementation of planned LNG projects.

The draft strategy only had two scenarios of development of the country’s fuel and energy sector, a targeted one and an inertial scenario, while the revised variant of the document adds two more scenarios, a stress scenario and ‘technical potential’. The stress scenario suggests a considerable decline in fuel and energy sectors’ performance amid contraction of export possibilities and overall worsening of external conditions. Meanwhile the ‘technical potential’ scenario considers the highest possible performance levels depending on the current and projected technical level of fuel and energy sectors, infrastructure restrictions, though with economic profitability and reasonability of potential actions not considered.
