Hungary, Russia to amend Paks-2 NPP agreement — Hungarian Foreign Minister

BUDAPEST, April 11. /TASS/. Hungary and Russia agreed to make amendments in the Paks-2 nuclear power plant (NPP) construction and financing agreement to avoid EU sanctions, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szjiiarto said on Tuesday after talks with CEO of the Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom Aleksey Likhachev.

A number of agreements under this project were made more than nine years ago and "the life and technology situation changed to such extent that they can be exposed to sanctions" introduced against Russia, the minister noted. "Sanctions complicate the situation and it was required therefore to find a legal basis by making amendments in current agreements," Szijjarto said in a video posted on Facebook [banned in Russia, owned by Meta Corporation recognized as extremist in Russia - TASS].

"The good piece of news is that we have agreed today to make amendments in construction and financing agreement," the minister noted. Revised documents under the Paks-2 project will be presented in line with EU rules for approval by the European Commission in Brussels, Szijjarto said. "We hope the European Commission will not jeopardize the long-term safety of power supply for Hungary," he added.
