US move to revoke Russia’s market economy status illogical — ambassador

On Thursday, the US Department of Commerce announced that Washington would no longer consider Russia a market economy when applying its anti-dumping procedures

WASHINGTON, November 11. /TASS/. Washington’s decision to revoke Russia’s market economy status is illogical, Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said on Friday.

In a statement, posted on the Russian embassy’s official Telegram channel, the ambassador welcomed the US Department of the Treasury’s decision to lift financial restrictions affecting Russian diplomatic missions. At the same time, he stressed that the move "does not relieve the United States of responsibility for imbalances in world markets, which are caused by numerous illegitimate unilateral barriers."

"Today’s illogical announcement by the US administration - that Russia is now somehow considered a non-market economy - falls into the same category," he said.

The US Department of Commerce announced on Thursday Washington would no longer consider Russia a market economy when applying its anti-dumping procedures. The department vested Russia with the status in 2002. "This decision [to revoke Russia's market economy status] gives the United States the ability to apply the full force of the US anti-dumping law to address the market distortions caused by increasing interference from the Russian government in their economy," the department said in a statement.
