Germany studies decree on ruble payments for gas, sees various interpretations

Earlier, the Russian president requested moving payments for gas supplies to unfriendly countries to rubles

BERLIN, April 4. /TASS/. Germany believes that settlements for Russian gas should be in euros, and continues to study the decree on transferring these payments into rubles with its partners in the EU, official spokesperson for the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs Beate Baron told reporters.

"This decree is being studied, we are exchanging information with our partners in the EU," she said, adding, "Our position is clear: private contracts remain relevant, as well as settlements in euros and dollars." "There are various interpretations of this decree," she noted.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin requested moving payments for gas supplies to unfriendly countries to rubles, saying that Moscow would refuse accepting payments on such contracts in discredited currencies, including dollars and euros. He also tasked the government with giving Gazprom an instruction on amending present contracts. On March 31, Putin signed a decree on the rules of gas trade with unfriendly countries, which stipulates a new system of contract payment.
