Afghanistan not doing enough to ensure border security — Tajikistan

Tajikistan’s border troops said hopefully the Taliban will apologize to the Tajik people and take "additional effective measures" to secure the border

DUSHANBE, December 25. /TASS/. The Taliban government of Afghanistan is not doing a good enough job ensuring security on the border with Tajikistan as evidenced by attacks on the former Soviet republic, the Tajik National Security Committee said in a report.

Commenting on Tuesday night’s border clash, the Committee said: "The Taliban government has shown serious and repeated irresponsibility in honoring its international obligations and constant pledges to ensure security and stability on the state border with Tajikistan and fight members of terrorist organizations."

Tajikistan’s border troops said hopefully the Taliban will apologize to the Tajik people and take "additional effective measures" to secure the border.

Three Afghan terrorists who illegally crossed the border near Shamsiddin Shohin in the Tajik border region of Khatlon were neutralized after putting up armed resistance in the small hours of December 24. Two Tajik border guards were killed in the clash, Tajikistan’s National Security Committee reported.

In late November, five Chinese nationals were killed and five more people were wounded in Afghan attacks on Tajik territory. Tajik President Emomali Rahmon condemned the Afghan provocations and ordered measures to prevent similar incidents from repeating. The republic’s Foreign Ministry also called on Afghanistan’s current government to take effective measures to ensure stability and security on the state border. On December 24, Tajikistan announced opening four new crossings on its border with Afghanistan.

Tajikistan has the longest border with Afghanistan, spanning 1,344 km, among Central Asian countries as it borders four provinces in northeastern Afghanistan.

Following the US decision to withdraw troops from Afghanistan in 2021, radical Taliban supporters took control of the government there. According to Tajikistan, militants from various terrorist organizations have been active in northeastern Afghanistan.
