Vatican's engagement in Ukraine settlement does not imply US withdrawal — Trump

According to the US president, "it would be great" to hold peace talks specifically at the Vatican, as he believes it "would have some extra significance" and could be "helpful"

WASHINGTON, May 20. /TASS/. The Vatican's involvement in the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict does not mean the US is moving away from the peace process, US President Donald Trump said while answering reporters' questions at the White House.

"No, no, no," the US leader said in response to a related question. According to him, "it would be great" to hold peace talks specifically at the Vatican, as he believes it "would have some extra significance" and could be "helpful." Trump also called it a "great idea" to hold the talks at the Vatican.

Earlier, Pope Leo XIV stated that the Holy See was ready to facilitate efforts to resolve the crisis and urged the parties to engage in direct dialogue. Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin suggested the Vatican could host a meeting on the Ukrainian settlement.

A TASS source in the Vatican noted that the Holy See has consistently offered mediation and advocated for a resolution, though this has so far led only to a humanitarian mission by the head of the Italian Bishops' Conference, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, who previously visited Kiev, Moscow, Washington and Beijing.
