European leaders stunned by Trump’s reluctance to impose sanctions on Russia — media

According to The Financial Times, they added it was clear the US president was "not ready to put greater pressure"

LONDON, May 19. /TASS/. Leaders of European countries who spoke to US President Donald Trump after his phone call with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, wer stunned by Washington’s unwillingness to impose new sanctions on Moscow, The Financial Times said, citing a source.

"One person familiar with the conversation said the leaders on the call were stunned by the US president’s description of what was agreed. They added it was clear Trump was "not ready to put greater pressure" on Putin to come to the negotiating table in earnest," it wrote.

Putin and Trump spoke over the phone earlier on Monday. According to the Russian leader, the conversation lasted for more than two hours and was quite constructive.

Following phone talks with Putin, Trump held a phone call with European leaders and Vladimir Zelensky. The call involved French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
