MOSCOW, April 24. /TASS/. The world is going through a time of serious upheaval, and this instability could increase the risk of a major global conflict, Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Imangali Tasmagambetov said.
Speaking at an international conference titled "Contribution of the peoples of the CSTO member states to Victory in the Great Patriotic War" at the Central Museum of the Armed Forces of Russia, he noted that "the current transitional period carries the risk of a new global war being unleashed. We know that nuclear weapons and the near universal tendency towards military escalation make a third world war a real possibility. This makes the analysis of conflict potentials in the modern world both timely and vital - not only for academic study but for international political practice."
According to him, CSTO member countries are acutely aware of today’s security challenges and are keeping the memory of victory in the Great Patriotic War close in mind. "It is our sacred duty to fight for the preservation of our historical memory, to resist any attempts to distort the events of those years, to belittle the significance of the great feat of the Soviet people," Tasmagambetov said.
"Amid today’s complex environment of profound geopolitical shifts, CSTO member states are jointly responding to many security challenges, strengthening military brotherhood and fine-tuning cooperation mechanisms to counter common threats. In this sense, the Organization stands as a worthy heir to those traditions that helped the peoples of the USSR to achieve their Great Victory. And of course, preserving the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War, the heroic deeds of our fathers, the traditions of our culture, the principles of generosity and courage is not only our duty, but also serves as a way to guarantee continuity in the glorious history of our peoples," the CSTO secretary general added.
