Bundestag approves 3-billion-euro package of additional military aid to Kiev

Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that he would only approve additional arms deliveries if the debt brake is eased

BERLIN, March 21. /TASS/. The Bundestag budget committee has approved the German Finance Ministry's request for an additional military aid package of 3 billion euros for Kiev this year, according to the DPA news agency, which cited participants in the committee's meeting.

Recently, Germany has witnessed intense debates regarding the provision of this aid package to Kiev. Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that he would only approve additional arms deliveries if the debt brake - a rule that prohibits spending beyond budget revenues - is eased. This week, both the Bundestag and the Bundesrat (the federal lands' council) gave their approval to lift the debt brake.

Additionally, a Bundestag committee on Friday authorized an unbudgeted allocation of over 8.25 billion euros in military aid to Kiev for the years 2026 to 2029.

Scholz informed the media at the EU summit on Thursday that an additional 4 billion euros has been earmarked for military support to Ukraine, bringing the total for 2025 to 7 billion euros. However, this budget still requires approval from the Bundestag. Germany is the second-largest arms supplier to Ukraine, following the United States. According to the Cabinet spokesperson, Steffen Hebestreit, Germany has provided Kiev with various forms of assistance totaling approximately 44 billion euros since the onset of the conflict.

The Russian side has consistently remarked that strengthening the military capabilities of the Kiev regime only serves to prolong the conflict.
