DUBAI, March 17. /TASS/. The creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel is the only way to establish peace and stability in the Middle East, Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Center for Sustainable Development Head at Columbia University in New York said.
"There is war in Syria, Yemen. There is war in Sudan, Lebanon and Libya. Most of these wars were instigated by the United States or with their participation. Well, or provoked by Israel. <...> Therefore, I am convinced that it is necessary to establish peace. The path to peace lies in the existence of a State of Palestine alongside the State of Israel. In my opinion, this is the only real way," he said in an interview with the Iranian agency ANA.
As the American political scientist noted, there are radical elements in every country, but it is necessary to move along the path of compromise, which involves the creation of two states.
The situation in the Middle East sharply escalated after the infiltration of armed supporters of the radical Palestinian movement Hamas from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory on October 7, 2023, accompanied by the killing of residents of border settlements and the kidnapping of hostages. In response, Israel launched a ground military operation in the Palestinian enclave. The fighting continued until January 19 of this year, when a ceasefire regime came into force in Gaza, stipulated in an agreement concluded by Israel and Hamas with the mediation of Egypt, Qatar, and the US. At the same time, the military operations of the Israeli army on the West Bank of the Jordan River continue to this day.
