Canadian response to American tariffs to have maximum impact in US — Carney

On March 4, the US administration imposed 25% tariffs on almost all imports from Canada and Mexico, and it also raised tariffs on goods from China from 10% to 20%

OTTAWA, March 11. /TASS/. The future Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney has pledged to make sure that Canada’s response to the latest American tariffs will have maximum impact in the US.

"President [of US Donald] Trump’s latest tariffs are an attack on Canadian workers, families, and businesses. My government will ensure our response has maximum impact in the US and minimal impact here in Canada, while supporting the workers impacted," he wrote on the X social network.

On March 4, the US administration imposed 25% tariffs on almost all imports from Canada and Mexico, and it also raised tariffs on goods from China from 10% to 20%. The current prime minister of Canada Justine Trudeau said after that that the US had started a trade war against Canada, which is why Ottawa had imposed reciprocal tariffs against Washington. Canada will be implementing 25% tariffs against 155 bln Canadian dollars ($107.4 bln) worth of American goods, he said.

Trump said earlier on Tuesday that the US would raise duties on steel and aluminum supplies from Canada to the US to 50% from March 12, adding that the decision was made in response to the introduction of duties by the Canadian authorities on electricity supplied to the US.
