European Commission sees EU expansion as best response to new challenges — official

Maros Sefcovic stressed that the European Commission will do everything possible to speed up the process of including new countries in the EU

BRUSSELS, March 11. /TASS/. The European Commission believes that in the new geopolitical conditions the size of countries matters again and therefore the expansion of the European Union would be the best response to new challenges, Maros Sefcovic, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, and European Commissioner for Interinstitutional Relations and Transparency, said at a session in the European Parliament.

At this session the majority of MEPs spoke in support of launching a new arms race in Europe.

"New geopolitics reality and transactional fragmentation of the world means that size matters again," he said.

Therefore, according to the European Commission, "enlargement the European family, enlargement of democracy, enlargement of respect for our [EU] values are the best answers for today unstable world," the EU official said.

Sefcovic stressed that the European Commission will do everything possible to speed up the process of including new countries in the EU.
