EU seeks ways to bypass Hungary’s objections at Thursday’s summit on Ukraine — Bloomberg

According to the news agency, officials are already discussing options to maintain anti-Russian sanctions, which Hungary’s prime minister has repeatedly spoken against

NEW YORK, March 6. /TASS/. The European Union is already taking steps to circumvent objections by Hungary at the summit of the organization on recent developments in Ukraine and strengthening of European defense on March 6, Bloomberg reported, citing official sources.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has warned that he intends to prevent any decisions at this summit that would prolong the conflict in Ukraine.

According to an official, the biggest challenge for the EU is the search for a way to overcome Hungary’s opposition. European Council President Antonio Costa will try to come to a consensus with the Hungarian PM during the summit, but if he fails, the bloc will focus on finding a way to sidestep Orban’s objections rather than argue into the early hours, an EU diplomat said.

According to the news agency, officials are already discussing options to maintain anti-Russian sanctions, which Hungary’s prime minister has repeatedly spoken against. Particularly, measures requiring a majority vote during the voting are under consideration. This, however, will not be an easy task, as the current European legislation is based on the principle of unanimity of decision-making, the agency recalled.
