Russia bans mining in ten regions from January 1

The ban was introduced in Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachai-Circassia, North Ossetia, Chechnya, Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions

MOSCOW, January 1. /TASS/. The decree of the Russian government on the ban on digital currency mining in ten regions and its restriction in three other ones becomes effective from January 1.

Restrictions will be in force until March 15, 2031, driven by potential risks of energy shortage on such territories.

The ban was introduced in Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachai-Circassia, North Ossetia, Chechnya, Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions.

Furthermore, mining is banned in certain areas of the Irkutsk Region, Buryatia and Trans-Baikal Region but temporarily, during energy consumption peaks. They will be from January 1 to March 15 in 2025 and from November 15 to March 15 in coming years.

The list of regions is not exhaustive and can be revised according to decisions of the governmental commission on electric power sector development to maintain the energy consumption balance. The number of regions with prohibited mining may grow if there is a relevant request from governors, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said before.
