BERLIN, March 3. /TASS/. The suspect in a hit-and-run in the city of Mannheim (federal state of Baden-Wurttemberg) in southwestern Germany is believed to be a German citizen, and acted alone, DPA news agency reported citing security sources.
According to the agency, the suspect is now in hospital with injuries. Preliminary data say that from five to 10 people were injured in the accident. Earlier, the Bild newspaper mentioned 25 victims.
It is currently unclear whether it was an accident or an attack. According to eyewitnesses, the driver plowed the car into a crowd in a pedestrian zone near the Galeria Kaufhof shopping center near the water tower in the main Planken shopping street. A carnival fair with dozens of food stalls and attractions is taking place nearby. The photos, according to DPA, depict a smashed black subcompact car of the alleged attacker.
A police spokesman said the investigation was underway. Police asked residents to avoid the city center. Psychological support was provided to help the victims. At the moment, two adults and one child are receiving emergency care at the University Hospital Mannheim.
