Bundestag member urges new German government to revive dialogue with Russia

Steffen Kotre underscored that his party, AfD, achieved the most success in its history and that elections' result should encourage other parties to reconsider their position

BERLIN, February 27. /TASS/. The new German government should immediately reinitiate dialogue with Russia, something that the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, or the country’s second-strongest political force, will strive toward, Steffen Kotre, a member of the German Bundestag, told TASS.

Commenting on the early parliamentary election in Germany, Kotre, an expert on foreign policy issues at the far-right party, said: "By now, AfD has achieved the most success in its history." The heavy vote of confidence should encourage other parties to reconsider their position, he argued.

"Germany’s new government should immediately revive dialogue with Russia, and we will be working toward this," the lawmaker stressed.

On February 23, Germany held early Bundestag elections. According to early official election results, the CDU/CSU bloc emerged victorious, securing 28.6% of the vote. For the first time in its history, AfD placed second, nearly doubling its vote share from 2021 when it scored 20.8%. The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), led by outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz, came in third, garnering support from approximately 16.4% of the voters — about a third less than in 2021. The Greens and the Left Party, received around 11.6% and 8.8% of the votes, respectively.
