Starmer says ‘there must be a US backstop’ for any EU troops deployment in Ukraine

"A US security guarantee is the only way to effectively deter Russia from attacking Ukraine again," he said

LONDON, February 17. /TASS/. Any potential EU troops deployment in Ukraine should be backed by US guarantees, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said following an informal meeting on Ukraine in Paris.

"I'm prepared to consider committing British forces on the ground alongside others if there is a lasting peace agreement. But there must be a US backstop because a US security guarantee is the only way to effectively deter Russia from attacking Ukraine again," he said in comments carried by UK media.

"So I will go to Washington next week to meet President Trump and to discuss what we see as the key elements of a lasting peace," the prime minister went on to say.

Starmer said he spoke with Vladimir Zelensky on Friday and will do so again in the coming days.

Taking questions from reporters, Starmer reiterated that Ukraine’s security can’t be guaranteed without a US commitment. He said security guarantees "must be part of a package with US backing because otherwise I don't think they will operate effectively as guarantees because they won't be an effective deterrence."

According to Starmer, the discussions are in the very early stages and it is right that Europe is showing willingness to step up to ensure its collective security. He said this is a once in a generation moment for Europe to take measures for its security.

The prime minister reiterated that he remains committed to the principle of "peace through strength," adding that cutting aid to Kiev amid potential negotiations would be a big mistake. According to Starmer, the West should now step up its support for Ukraine to ensure that it is in the strongest possible position ahead of peace talks.

He also said the US will remain a key NATO member.
