Europe-less Ukraine talks would be exercise in futility, says German diplomat

According to German foreign ministry spokesman, Europe plays an important role in the settlement effort because a majority of Russia’s frozen assets are in Europe

BERLIN, February 17. /TASS/. The German government believes that holding talks on Ukraine without Europe’s participation would be an exercise in futility, a foreign ministry spokesman said.

"Clearly, peace talks [on Ukraine] without Europe make no sense at all," the German diplomat said, adding that Europe plays an important role in the settlement effort because a majority of Russia’s frozen assets are in Europe.

He also cited EU sanctions against Russia and assistance to Ukraine as a reason why Europe must not be excluded from talks. "This is sanctions, frozen assets, security guarantees. So, I can only imagine that Europe will be involved in these discussions," he said.

An informal meeting of EU leaders will be held in Paris on February 17. The central topic is expected to be the Ukrainian conflict and European security. According to Politico, which cited diplomats, the Paris meeting’s agenda will include anti-Russian sanctions, assistance to Ukraine, the use of frozen Russian assets, and the potential deployment of troops to Ukraine.

According to the Financial Times, the European Union, caught off guard, is scrambling to respond to US-Russia preparations for peace negotiations on Ukraine.
