HAVANA, February 13. /TASS/. The United States has been sending migrants in handcuffs to its military base in the Cuban province of Guantanamo, a military territory that Cuba has been claiming back, the Ministry of Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba said.
"The United States is sending handcuffed migrants to the illegally occupied area in Guantanamo," the Cuban ministry said in a post on X. "The White House wants to detain some 30,000 people there," the post reads.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump ordered the Pentagon and the US Department of Homeland Security to expand the existing migrant facility at Guantanamo Bay to 30,000. The first US flight carrying deportees landed there on February 5. Cuba has repeatedly voiced opposition to this decision by the US administration.
The decision on establishing a specially-designated prison at the US naval base was made by the Pentagon under the 43rd US President, George W. Bush, to detain people during the US war on terror in Afghanistan and other military operations. While Barack Obama, who replaced Bush Jr., issued an order to shut down the facility within 12 months, the Guantanamo facility is still functioning, provoking harsh criticism from human rights activists. Cuba claims that the base is an area illegally occupied by the US in Guantanamo.
