While the situation in several areas of Syria has somewhat stabilized, security in the Arab republic’s northeastern neighborhoods and the northern city of Menbij is still impaired, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in an update.
According to OCHA, more than 40,000 displaced Syrians have been accommodated in some 200 collective centers in the country’s northeast. They are being provided with food, hygiene kits and psychological support. Around 700,000 people have received food as humanitarian aid in northwestern Syria since the escalation of hostilities, OCHA reported.
As of December 12, over 1.1 million people, mostly women and children, were displaced across Syria since the latest escalation began on November 27, OCHA said.
In late November, armed opposition militias launched a large-scale offensive against the positions of the Syrian army after which government forces withdrew from the city. President Bashar Assad resigned and fled the country. On December 10, Mohammed al-Bashir, who had served as prime minister of the so-called Salvation Government, the civilian administration formed by opposition groups in the Idlib governorate, since January, declared himself the head of the Syrian government for the transitional period to last until March 1, 2025.
