WASHINGTON, October 25. /TASS/. Mike Johnson (Republican lawmaker from Louisiana) has been elected as speaker of the US House of Representatives, television channels broadcast the session.

Johnson garnered 220 votes, which is sufficient to be elected.

A majority of Republicans, following a closed-door vote on Tuesday evening, supported Johnson’s nomination for speaker of the House of Representatives. The Speaker is the third most senior official in the US federal government.

In his speech after the election, Johnson said that his first legislative action would be a bill in support of Israel. However, he did not directly mention aid to Ukraine.
