Russian Emergencies Ministry’s flight departs for Turkey carrying another rescue team

The special flight will carry 50 rescue workers and eleven medics, as well as three pieces of equipment

MOSCOW, February 8. /TASS/. An IL-76 aircraft of the Russian Emergencies Ministry has departed for earthquake-ravaged Turkey, carrying another team of 50 rescue workers and eleven medics, the ministry told TASS on Wednesday.

"An IL-76 aircraft of the Russian Emergencies Ministry has flown to the Republic of Turkey carrying the second echelon of the airmobile group. Fulfilling Russian President Vladimir Putin’s order, Emergencies Minister Alexander Kurenkov, in cooperation with Health Minister Mikhail Murashko, decided to enlarge the group. The special flight will carry 50 rescue workers and eleven medics, as well as three pieces of equipment," the press service said.

The Emergencies Ministry added that psychologists and specialists of the Tsentrospas rescue squad of the Russian Emergencies Ministry, alongside health professionals from federal institutions of the Russian Health Ministry, were on board. Among the medics are traumatologists, neurosurgeons, surgeons, children’s surgeons and critical care anesthesiologists.

A total of more than 100 rescue workers from the Russian Emergencies Ministry arrived in Turkey to carry out search and rescue operations in the Kahramanmaras province, the most earthquake-affected area. Russian First Deputy Emergencies Minister Alexander Chupriyan said that Russian rescue crews will be working in Turkey until Turkish authorities wrap up the search and rescue operation.

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit Turkey’s southeastern Kahramanmaras province on February 6. The tremors, followed by hundreds of aftershocks, were felt in ten provinces of the country, as well as in neighboring states, including Syria. According to the latest data, more than 8,500 died and over 49,000 were injured in Turkey.
