Death toll from Turkey earthquake surpasses 5,400

Some 31,777 people injured

ANKARA, February 7. /TASS/. The number of fatalities caused by earthquakes in Turkey has climbed to 5,434, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca told local TV channels on Tuesday.

"Unfortunately, we lost 5,434 people as a result of destructive earthquakes. Some 31,777 people were injured. The number of destroyed buildings amounts to 5,775," the top health official said.

He added that over 1,100 ambulances had arrived in disaster areas from other provinces. Additional 6,000 emergency physicians and about 3,000 other specialists are working on site.

On Monday, two powerful earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.7 and 7.6 rocked Kahramanmaras province within nine hours causing mass destruction in ten Turkish provinces. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared an emergency situation in these regions for three months.
