Police detains 65 activists during anti-government rally in Chisinau

The demonstrators marched down Chisinau’s main avenue but were stopped by the police on the approaches to the central square in front of the government building. Instead of clashing with the police, the protesters handed white chrysanthemums to policemen

CHISINAU, November 6. /TASS/. The Moldovan police have detained 65 participants in Sunday’s anti-government rally in Chisinau.

"Sixty-five people were detained for identification, four of them are minors. Apart from that, the police have identified several people who incited unrest and created threat to public security," the city police department said on Sunday. "Several provocations against law enforcers aiming at destabilizing the situation and breaking through police cordons were reported."

According to the police data, the rally was attended by 1,700 people whereas the organizers said some 50,000 people took part.

The demonstrators marched down Chisinau’s main avenue but were stopped by the police on the approaches to the central square in front of the government building. Instead of clashing with the police, the protesters handed white chrysanthemums to policemen.

In his video address to the demonstrators, Ilan Sor, leader of the opposition party Sor, said that the country’s government is failing to cope with the challenges and has driven the situation into an economic and energy crisis.

After the rally, the demonstrators laid funeral wreaths to the building of the presidential administration and burnt utility bills in front of its entryway.

The rally yielded a resolution demanding resignation of President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita.
