Chinese Defense Minister expresses protest to US’ Austin over arms shipment to Taiwan

According to Wei Fenghe, Washington’s attempts to "constrain China with Taiwan" are doomed to fail

BEIJING, June 10. /TASS/. Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe expressed a decisive protest to US authorities for shipment of weapons to Taiwan during his meeting with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin Friday, according to CCTV.

"The US once again stated recently that it will sell weapons to Taiwan. This seriously contradicts China’s interests, threatens security and sovereignty of our country," the Chinese Minister said. "In this regard, the People’s Republic of China expresses a decisive protest."

According to Wei Fenghe, Washington’s attempts to "constrain China with Taiwan" are doomed to fail.

The meeting took place during the 19th IISS Asia Security Summit, also known as the Shangri-La Dialogue. According to CCTV, Wei Fenghe and Austin stated their readiness to remove disagreements and strengthen mutual trust.

In 1979, the US cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan and established them with mainland China. While recognizing the "one China" policy, Washington continues to maintain contacts with the self-governing island and ships weapons to Taibei, sparking protests from the Chinese government, which views Taiwan as a part of its territory and decisively warns against an separatist aspirations.
