Donbass’ Slavyansk thermal power plant halts operations

The decision was made protect the lives and health of the plant’s staff, and due to the need to evacuate employees and their family members

DONETSK, May 28. /TASS/. The Slavyansk thermal power plant (TPP), located in the north of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), has stopped operations over hostilities, the Donbassenergo energy company said in a statement.

"Donbassenergo PJSC has decided to halt operations of Slavyansk TPP on May 27, 2022 to protect the lives and health of the plant’s staff, and due to the need to evacuate employees and their family members," the company said.

The Slavyansk coal-fired power station is one the largest in Donbass. It is located in the town of Nikolayevka, next to Slavyansk, in the Ukraine-controlled area of the Donetsk People’s Republic.

Tensions escalated along the contact line in Donbass on February 17. The Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR) reported the heaviest shelling by Ukraine in months. On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced recognition of the DPR and LPR and on February 24 launched a special military operation in Ukraine following a request for help from the leaders of two Donbass republics. He emphasized that Moscow has no plans to occupy Ukrainian territories, but the goals are the demilitarization and denazification of the country.
