CHISINAU, May 27. /TASS/. The leader of unrecognized Transnistria, Vadim Krasnoselsky, has noted the effectiveness of the peacekeeping mission that has operated in the region under Russia’s aegis for many years. He was speaking before participants in the conference entitled War and Peace on the Dniester: 30 Years of the Peacekeeping Operation in Transnistria.

"Time has proved that the peacekeeping mission in Transnistria is one of the most successful and effective ones. It is essential that the people of Transnistria fully support it and see no alternatives," Krasnoselsky said, according to his press-service.

Russia’s Blue Helmets were introduced into the zone of hostilities on July 29, 1992, in accordance with the agreement on the principles of a peace settlement of the armed conflict in the Transnistrian region of Moldova, signed on July 21, 1992 by the presidents of Russia and Moldova in the presence of Transnistria’s leader. The peacekeepers currently maintain normal life and security in the disengagement zone along the Dniester, together with their counterparts from Moldova, Transnistria and a group of military observers from Ukraine.

The Moldovan authorities have long called for the replacement of Russian military personnel by an international civilian mission under the auspices of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
